Since 1992, RENECOFOR (the National Network for Long-term FOrest ECOsystem Monitoring) has been pursuing its objective to detect long-term changes in French forest ecosystems.
The 102 RENECOFOR sites, or “plots”, are all located in State Forests. They are part of an international network of sites extending over 34 European countries.
Among the RENECOFOR objectives is the long-term monitoring of forest soils. Samples are taken every 10 to 15 years to analyse changes in soil composition and quality.
Alain Brethes is a soil scientist who joined the ONF in 1977. He is one of only a handful of specialists on soil composition in France.
